============== [ CREATIVE TIP ]==================
CREATING FABRIC OR PAPER MOTIFS FOR USE ON CREATIVE PROJECTS:
Fabric and paper motifs are created by gluing three or more layers of fabric or paper together to make a stiff and durable piece. They can be glued to any creative project. They are fun and easy to create and will enhance all of the wonderful creations that you produce. Both motifs can be used on greeting cards and books or anything made with paper. Fabric motifs are wonderful enhancements to necklaces, cloth dolls, and garments. Make sure you use a fabric glue when gluing fabric. Fabric motifs can also be glued to metal, wood, etc.
SUPPLIES:
Impress Me rubber stamps
Cover weight paper or card stock -at least 60# or heavier
Good quality of unbleached muslin-about a half a yard
Aleene's tacky glue for paper
Fabric glue for fabric
Old credit card
Stamp pad of your choice for paper, or fabric stamp pad for fabric
Bottled acrylic paint
Markers to color in the motif (optional)
Sponge---I use the Spontex sponge from Home Depot for sponging
paint onto the rubber stamp. Cut the sponge into 1 ½" squares.
Freezer paper for a palette cut into 12"squares if using acrylic paint
Water container
Paper towels
Plastic to cover your work surface
Sharp paper and fabric scissors
Old toothpicks-for fabric motifs
Ball headed sewing pins---for fabric motifs
Corrugated cardboard---for fabric motifs
PROCESS:
1) Rubber stamp an "Impress me" rubber stamp onto fabric or paper using
paint or a stamp pad. If using acrylic paint, squeeze two or more
colors on top of each other onto the freezer paper palette.
Sponge the color onto the stamp, making sure that the paint is even.
Turn the stamp face down onto the fabric or paper. Remove the stamp
and wash it with a toothbrush and water.
2) Cut around the stamped image leaving approximately a ¼" border.
3) Cut two more pieces of fabric or cover weight paper the same size
as the stamped image.
4) Squeeze a line of glue across top of the back of the rubber stamped image.
5) Use an old credit card to pull the glue down the image.
6) Place the glued piece onto the second piece of paper or fabric.
7) Repeat steps 4 and 5 onto a third piece of fabric or paper.
If you wish a stiffer motif, do more layers.
8) Let the glue dry.
9) Cut out the motif with pair of sharp paper or fabric scissors and add
decorative paint or markers to enhance the motif.
The following step is only necessary for fabric motifs. After the fabric is cut out, there will be a raw muslin edge that needs finishing: 1) Place a ball-headed pin through the fabric motif. 2) Squeeze acrylic paint onto your palette. 3) Use a toothpick to apply acrylic paint to the raw edges of the motif. 4) Place the pin onto the corrugated cardboard to dry.
Create more than one motif at a time and store them by color or category in small re-sealable bags. They make wonderful enhancements to your projects. Have fun with this easy and fun technique!!!
============== [ Future Plans ]==================

Paint, New Ways, New Materials" online by the end of the month.
